Dance
At St Aldhelm's Academy, we believe that learning through dance provides a unique and engaging way for students to express themselves kinetically and creatively. Dance serves as a powerful pedagogical tool and creative process that allows students to explore, express, and make sense of the world. Our vision is to use dance in lessons, clubs, and performances both inside and outside the school day to help students grow as individuals, develop empathy, and foster collaboration. These values are at the core of our Performing Arts department and align with the wider ethos of the Academy.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3 (KS3), students are introduced to dance as part of their Performing Arts education. Through practical lessons, students learn basic dance techniques and styles while exploring how movement can be used as a form of self-expression. They develop core skills such as coordination, rhythm, and physical control, while also building their confidence and creativity.
Dance at KS3 promotes teamwork, as students often work together to create and perform routines. In addition to learning choreographed movements, students are encouraged to experiment with improvisation and explore different dance genres. We offer various dance clubs outside of regular lessons where students can further hone their skills, gain exposure to different styles, and enjoy the camaraderie of dancing in a group.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 (KS4), students have the opportunity to take dance as a formal option through the BTEC qualification in Performing Arts (Dance Pathway). Here, they dive deeper into their dance education, learning a wide range of styles, from classical ballet to contemporary street dance. Students enhance their technical abilities, study choreographed routines, and explore the history and context behind different dance forms.
Our purpose-built dance studio, equipped with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and professional lighting, provides the ideal environment for students to perfect their technique and create dynamic performances. In addition, our dancers regularly perform in the school’s main theatre, participating in shows, musicals, and other productions. Dance at KS4 not only strengthens students’ skills but also fosters a love for performing, with the chance to showcase their talents on stage.
